Project Highlights

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Facility is the centerpiece of a $5 billion program to protect Boston Harbor against pollution from Metropolitan Boston’s sewer system. The project, conducted under a court order as part of the Boston Harbor Clean Up Program, was completed under a budget and met all major milestones. As part of the construction management team under contract to the MWRA, Coast and Harbor provided contract administration on the $3.2 billion upgrade and expansion of a primary wastewater facility to a state-of-the-art primary and secondary treatment facility on Deer Island. Coast and Harbor was part of the team from the beginning of the project in 1990 until completion in December 2002. Project highlight include the largest installation of stacked clarifiers in the United States, innovation egg-shaped digesters, a 9.5 mile undersea outfall tunnel and a five mile undersea tunnel from Deer Island to a headworks facility on Nut Island.
